[Futurelandia] The Wonderful Christmas (and maybe into New Years stuff too)
[ Their pack's Christmas tended to be one which was full and chaotic, despite the fact that there were increasingly less children in the house as Yamato and Junko (and yes, Koji too) all grew to maturity. In some ways, this was actually more "kids" than had been in the house for it than in a long time, what with their new additions.
Still: Masaomi, Nariko, Ada, Sullivan, Emily, Octavio, Tom, Yamato, Junko, Koji, Veronica, and Audrey - Twelve people with at least one gift for everyone else, often times more in the case of those who were more generous or had deeper pockets or more to impress others with. The sheer number (even if it had grown over time) is probably what prompted them to set up a grate tree in one of the living room spaces which was probably meant to be a formal dining room and then lay out all the presents from everyone wrapped up under it andt hen sprawled out for a wide area around it all. There's chairs set up in a circle around the room to give everyone room to sit and the first one there (Which if, of course, Masaomi) brought bags for the wrapping paper to go into a recycle.
Also Masaomi has on a santa hat and a fake beard. Both of which Ada picked out years ago, and he wears mostly out of tradition. It's similarly out of tradition that he got up at the ass crack of dawn to sit in the room and eat some rice before anyone else got up, wait for them all to filter on in here usually starting with Ada or Sullivan or in recent years his eldest son so people can start to make breakfast and be ready. But either way, breakfast and present opening in the morning! A white elephant gift exchange game in the afternoon! A big dinner in the evening!
Christmas is a time of togetherness, where there has to be some structure, but there's a lot which can happen beyond all that and often did. Movies watched, songs sung, and even if this year of different and strange for a variety of reasons... well. It was still their day, and everyone would enjoy it. ]

Thanks.
[He answered her question, after all.]
When I asked you about the kids, it wasn't because I thought you actually regretted them. It's more that I'm always very afraid of being chained down, I wondered if you were the same. [Having kids, being in love with people rather than just having sex, getting involved in the intricacies of lives and shit? All of that created bonds, and she was always so hesitant about it.
Which made her romantic relationship pretty damn interesting.]

[ ... ]
It's not fair to pin it all on her, but a lot of it started with Ada questioning my parenting. [ He man exhales. He;s rambling a little here, revealing a lot more than he needs to in this moment. It's probably because he's starting to feel lonely, and that loneliness is offset by this intimacy with Emily. He shakes his head, speaking softly ]
She was right, of course. Nariko was offended I'd think that. [ In retrospect, Ada was biased in her assessment of Nariko and he's relationship, but... ] I'm not sure I appreciated the kids as kids until Koji was two. I'm not sure I helped out in any big way until Junko was seven. But chained down... [ He hums ] No, not as such. Never that, for me. But seeing a child as chains is making them a prop, and I don't think I fully realized the extent to which I'd had that prop-design in mind until this last year.
[ In is case, it had been trophies, badges of honor. It had been hopes for a more interesting future, and all of those children were adults before he stopped to think about it all. In a large way, he regrets that now, far more than he could ever regret having them. ]

Believe me, I'm very aware of how offended she was. [Because Masaomi was right. Ada had ulterior motives that outweighed whatever good she'd been trying to do, she was just close enough to get under Masaomi's skin, after all.]
Hopefully I can learn from you, then. I don't think they're props, but I do think that when you have them you run the risk of severely fucking up your kids for life or doing right by them. It's like there's no middle ground. [And it scares her to death, it makes her want to run off. Emily's compromise had been the idea of having a kid, but letting someone else raise it, trying to learn and get over what her parents had ultimately done to her.]
I don't know if it counts for anything, but I don't think you've really been all that bad. I mean, my dad just refused to even look at me. At least you talk to your kids and know they exist.
no subject
Was that naive, or was it confidence? ]
I'd have never thought of that. [ He hums ] I never knew my mother. Or well, which one was my mother. The pack I grew up in, I was connected through my father more than her, and the mothers we had were obscured some.
[ At least you talk to your kids, huh... ]
no subject
[But, then, apparently their own pack was going to shift into the same kind of behavior, so maybe she shouldn't answer him as if it was some far off concept. It was for Emily, personally, because her birth pack hadn't operated like that at all, but still.]
My point is when people think of bad parents they go right for physical abuse or neglect, and those things are appropriately shitty, of course. [She waved her free hand in the air a little.] But there's something to be said for parents who won't claim you or make it very clear they're only putting up with you until you're legal.
[She closed her eyes.] You haven't been perfect, dude, but I think it's kind of weird to expect someone to be a parent when you don't have an example of two working parents to draw from. Kind of seems like neither of you have that.
[They were basically two idiots flailing at being adults to their children.]

[ It's why he's opening up with this sort of stuff in the first place. He bites his lip, and then looks off to the side. Should he call Junko again? Or Koji? No, they were going to be fine, they were probably hanging out together. What was everyone else doing again? He didn't know Ada's plans... oh wait, he did. Her and Octavio were together, right? No, Octavio was with Audrey and Sully. Which meant Ada was going to be...
Somewhere.
Veronica was probably with her or Koji, right? Right, that makes sense. Tom was of course going to be with his friend. ]
You still going to rip Martin's balls off?
[ that's what she said at first. earlier tonight. He's totally not changing the subject ]
no subject
[HIs drunkness. Because, come to think of it, when does he ever talk about his feelings? Basically never. But! Ada lied and said she was going out with work friends but, really, she preferred to stay at home by herself. Audrey was with Sullivan, and Veronica with Koji!]
Probably not. We'll see how I feel after I tell him about this party.
[She'd mostly just been upset that he ditched her, but that's become the least meaningful thing of the whole night.]
On a scale of one to ten how lame are we going to be if we fall asleep before midnight?
[Since he was 'not' changing the subject and all.]
no subject
[ He'd prefer four-ish, but she would never tolerate that. ... Actually, speaking of ]
... Waaaait. You drove here, didn't you?
[ . . . Well he can uber home. You can uber at like four AM right?
That said, he nodded a little at the not ripping Martin's balls off. ... Where was Junko tonight? She hadn't told him shit. She probably told Nariko . ]
no subject
[Forget about being lame, he can't stay up for the next six hours minimum! His day is going to be hell at this rate if he doesn't get some amount of rest, even if it's going to promise a wicked hangover when he gets up.]
I did, but Martin's place is, like, maybe five minutes away from here. He can come get me. [Because she won't be in a state to be driving in the morning either. Weed takes a while to make its way out of her, so even though she'd brought her car she hadn't exactly planned on going home. If anything, Masaomi was free to use it if he could manage to sober up.
Also Junko literally just went and did as she pleased no one really asked her what she was doing except for Audrey and probably Yamato. So no one knows where she is - but her phone is near, so it's all good!]
no subject
But all the same... ]
What, you don't want to kiss me at midnight? [ A beat ] Or you could go snog Martin, if he's that close.
no subject
[Why do people kiss at midnight anyway? Emily has no clue, and it's not as if they need anymore good luck, if that's the explanation in the first place.]
There's no use in bothering him when he's studying or whatever, it'd end badly. I got what I came for, so I don't mind either way.
[Things like kissing at midnight weren't too important. She'd made it out of the house and had a good time, and celebrated the end of her semester!]
no subject
He's not the type to like a surprise like that, huh?
[ Masaomi is committing to one or the other thing. He's actually closing his eyes and squeezing her hand as he replies, genuinely curious about Martin. But he's also not really positive if he's going to nod off here or stay up or what. It seems like a bit of a waste of nod off here. ]
no subject
[They're the sort of couple that always sounds like they're arguing when it's really a mix of verbal foreplay and the simple fact that they talk to each other roughly.] But he's the most loyal man in the world, I swear. He's already tried to promise all this shit and I'm just - [She opens her eyes just for the sake of rolling them.] I'm not the planning type.
no subject
[ He's not the best for relationship advice and he knew it. Frankly, no one in their pack probably was for a variety of reasons. Ada's never had a serious boyfriend of girlfriend as far he knew (neither had Sullivan, but for different reasons), Octavio did but was dumped all the time, and Tom was just a mess there.
If anything, Emily's was probably the most conventional. ]
Maybe he'd like a message.
no subject
[She's not asking for advice, so Masaomi is safe.]
I don't know what I'd say, and he's the one that bailed on me at the last minute anyway, he doesn't get a message.
[Because there's a lot of irony in this, right? The guy loved plans but he'd tossed theirs pretty quickly.]
no subject
[ A beat, and ]
If I was less drunk, I'd do that thing where you insult him to see if you get defensive about him and prove you love him. That you see in all those movies, I mean. [ He sighs, and ] But I can put him through a wall if you need it.
no subject
[So that cliche wouldn't really pan out too well with her.] It's nothing like that, but I appreciate the offer.
[Emily yawns before she looks over at him.] Relationships are just complicated.
[And Masaomi probably knows that better than anyone.]
no subject
He's not some fucking monogamist, right?
[ Was that prejudiced? He's way too drunk to care right now ]
no subject
He isn't.
[He probably sounds that way, true, but Martin was from a pack and believed in pack ideals, he was just also very big on soul mates.]
no subject
[ Nathan was a headache, Amelia was a headache. The way Nariko was raised was a headache, Audrey's parents were a headache... Ethan wasn't strictly one, he guessed, but he was a creeper, right? Whatever. His eyes are still closed and he's sighing a little.
He wouldn't normally shoot that out but.
Still ]
no subject
[If he's drunk enough to start saying shit he usually wouldn't, losing all of his filters, then he's done, he needs to call it in for the night.
... She should say something else, maybe, or comment on that topic at all but it's better to avoid it. ]
no subject
[ He should set an alarm on his phone...
Well, this isn't the most comfortable bed, he'll get up in a few hours anyway. He squeezes her hand again, and shifts his position on the bed so that he can fall asleep. Fair enough.
He hopes she had a good night ]
The end?!
Sometimes it's enough to not be alone.
... She'll apologize to Martin for that voicemail she left him in the morning. He might not like surprises but everyone loves breakfast in bed made by your hung over girlfriend.
A very good night, yes.]
