[Futurelandia] The Thanksgiving and Early December Post

[ It's been around a month since everything started to change. And frankly, a damn sure more things have changed even in that month. There's simplistic ones, such as Masaomi getting a vasectomy which even if he tried to keep it on the downlow, everyone found out about because of what a whiner he was for his week of medical abstinence and everyone felt after that for how he proceeded to fuck every relevant woman in the house and who would sleep with him out of the house into submission for the next two or three days. Everyone sort of had a rude awakening there.

But then, some changes were bigger and more serious. A new member joined there pack (Veroncia) not all that long ago, and it was much to everyone except some of the adult's surprise. Everyone had to learn their new pecking order and where she fit in with the rest of them. Masaomi and Nariko continued their rituals and continued their seeing other people, to mixed results from both. Audrey was hanging around the house more, though she hadn't had the recommended Talk with Masaomi about joining, despite making this something of a second home for her. And of course, Junko's training continued despite the week long hiatus from it.

Everyone was changing, and everyone was adapting. Yamato even had a sexy car now. And at the culmination of everything, a sort of milestone in the midst of everything, there was Thanksgiving, the lead up to it, and the follow up after it leading into December. A time when a lot of people hung out in one house, and then things got weirdly tense for a variety of reasons. God bess us, every one. ]

[ She wants him to choose her... when she had already rejected his most heartfelt (and stupid) offer. There's a contradiction in that, at least to his eyes. But she had also said that he should think about it, and he knows he won't be able to stop thinking about it all the rest of the night. ... [She knows him too well to be shocked by any of that, and while Nariko had thought she might be too tired for much of anything the majority of the night is spent romping around with Masaomi. Somewhere between the first second and the middle-ish rounds she starts to feel better, all the things she couldn't have found the words to say are worked out during epic sex. And, really, that's how it's supposed to be.

Nariko feels a whole hell of a lot better in the morning, not in the least because they'll be checking out in a few hours. First they have to get dressed and make their way to Nathan's room, where their mother's lawyer, Aaron, has already set up shop. The man isn't terribly old but the lines on his face and the general speed that he worked with (glacial) seemed to give him an extra decade to the body of a man that should only be in his sixties, at the worst.]

I'm sure you're all anxious to get this over with, it's been a long few days.

[Said an old man who hadn't been around for most of it, but Nariko let that go with a roll of her eyes.]

I'll make this short. [The old minded man lifted up his suitcase with great effort, unlocked it, and pulled out two little pieces of paper, crisp little checks with shaky writing.] After the cost of the funeral services and my legal fees, the both of you are entitled to two million each. [When he sighed it was a rumbling sort of noise.] The words 'I apologize for your terrible childhood' were to be added in.

[Nariko leaned forward to take the check and look at it and - yeah. All the right zeroes, with the letterhead of her mother's estate.]

... Well, shit, she actually gave me something. Go fucking figure.

[Talk about a Christmas miracle. Nariko turns her check over, finds the pen that had been living behind her ear and writes something on the back before returning it to Aaron.] Half of mine needs to go to that account, though.

[She leans back to smile at her mate, knowing it take the snail-like lawyer a good few minutes to put half of her amount into the account that helped manage the house and their kids - In other words, have of it was going to Masaomi.]

Two million. Masaomi's reaction and Nathan's are different - Nathan is stonefaced through the thing for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is frowning a lot at their mom's message, but he's - well, two million is nothing to snark at. But Masaomi, for his part, looks over Nariko's shoulder at - ]

... That's a lot, Nariko.

[ He knows she has hundreds of thousands (now millions, and maybe it was even close before) in a personal account now, but... half of it? It's... what's funny, is that he actually intended to object to that, but he doesn't find anything objectionable in this moment. They were a family, and it feels like a more crystalized image for it than it had in... honestly, to him, even more than before they started all this open mateship stuff. Like he'd learned some life lessons about togetherness, or been tested and willing to accept more. So - Instead, he blinks, he blinks, and then he wraps his arms around her, hugging her close and kissing her even if Aaron and Nathan are here.

He needed to show some gratitude for that, after all. For their kids and for everything else. ]

[Nariko doesn't understand his reaction. Not because her views of money are inherently different from his (and they absolutely are), but because she couldn't figure out why he seemed a bit surprised. Was it that they got it at all, or that she immediately thought to give half of what was legally her own to him? It's not the sort of thing to question because in the end it doesn't really matter. She holds and kisses him back anyway for as long as he needs, and she'd do it even if there was a crowd staring at them.]

It is a lot, [She almost means to keep the words between them but that would be nearly impossible.] but if a price has to be put on it all then I can be okay with this one.

[It's enough to absolutely put their kids through college, to have emergency funds just in case something happened to a pack member or the house suffered incredible damage. And there would still be a great amount leftover to invest and generate more income.]

A million. A million for them and their family, for the household and for everyone else. And that's not even counting her personal account. There's a discussion to be had about how much of it should be combined (and he knows he's the one who often resists it the most) but right now - he was shocked enough that he says this really minor thing, this really light thing...

But it hits him. It's a million dollars. His eyes are alight, and he hugs her tighter, lifting her off the ground a little as the giddy feeling hits him. It doesn't feel right at a will reading, but - ]

[She squeaks a little as he lifts her up, and she can't help laughing a bit, here. It's definitely with him, not at. She hadn't been able to figure out why it was so important for her to come here, to go through all of it, but this was probably why. Her stupid, cruel, inhumane mother had put her through one last terrible ordeal but this time there was actually something worthwhile at the end of it! He (Masaomi? Or Nathan?) was right that it was morbid and wrong to put a price on years of abuse but Nariko couldn't really help it. This meant the crazy old bitch knew. She knew, and maybe even regretted it.

For Nariko, who had her own family and happiness? That was enough. To have a sign was enough.]

Guess I should quit my job, now! [Although she might as well since she'd had to take a week off to come here but, hey, logistics.] We can deposit it before we get on the plane.

[And they weren't too far off from that, either! But - she couldn't help glancing at her brother, too. Was he alright? Did he need to pick her up, too?]

[ It was Masaomi who said it, though Nathan wishes that he did. No, Nathan looked at the check and then when he felt his hands shaking handed it back to Aaron saying he'll have to handle the deposit later today. He put his hands in his pockets after that, watching Nariko and Masaomi's reaction. He even hears that Masomi whispers (loudly) to her as they are in the air - ]

What, but you like that job! [ And Nathan finally snorts, smiling himself.

... He's going to ask Irina to marry him, he decides. And he's going to fuck his sister. ... these might get in the way of each other. Still. This weekend's over, and he's not even begun to process all of his feelings. For a man who hadn't actually found all the happiness he wanted out of life this much money at the end of a trial from their mom and more importantly an admittance of guilt from her didn't end everything. It just made a weird hiccup in his own personal journey. But it did feel good, and it felt like a step.

Plus, hell, two million. So Nathan announces- ]

Guess I don't have price limit for your neighborhood.

[When she looks back at him there is something going on there. She knows it, but Nariko isn't psychic and she can't possibly hope to guess every single thing that's going through his head, but she does smile at him. There's a lot of irony in the fact that he makes a very important decision while she finally allows herself to feel romantic love for him, and actually show it. Not for too long, of course, but it's still there.]

I like it so much I might still keep it, we'll see how I feel after Christmas.

[She kisses him again, and looks to Aaron whose finished writing everything out. One check for her and one for Masaomi. They're done, now, there's nothing but the loose ends that can actually be tied up between the three of them, if there are any at all.

They can finally go home, now.]
